Abstract

|
Purpose: To analysis the recent trend of ski and snowboard injury, and to use this study results in designing injury-prevention strategy.
Materials and Methods: Ski and snowboard injuries in a ski resort in PyeongChang, Kangwon-do, South Korea, were evaluated from 2005 to 2007. All injured skiers and snowboarders were studied with a questionnaires, physical examination, and radiographs.
Results: From November 2005 to February 2007, recent two winter seasons, 1,380,720 people visited a resort located in PyeongChang, and 13,667 patients experienced ski and snowboard related injuries. Mean age was in the third decade. The incidences of ski related injuries was 0.42%(5771 patients) and snowboard related injuries was 0.57%(7896 patients). The injury rate was higher for men, moderate difficult slopes, late noon(3 p.m-5 p.m), and January. The major types of ski related injury was sprain and ligament injuries of knee and the major types of snowboard related injury was contusion and sprain of wrist.
Conclusion: This results would be helpful to prevent ski and snowboard related injury in the future.
